Aluminum Alloy Plate Sheet for Trailer Transmission Shaft

Overweight has always been a problem in special vehicles. There is an indispensable component on the chassis-the transmission shaft. In order to reduce weight, it is also made of aluminium alloy plate. Is this aluminum alloy transmission shaft good to use?

Most common special-purpose vehicle chassis adopt a front-wheel drive mode. The power generated by the engine passes through the output torque and rotational motion of the gearbox, and then is transmitted to the drive axle through the transmission shaft, and then to the wheels to drive the vehicle.

Both ends of the transmission shaft are connected to the flanges of the gearbox and the drive axle. When passing through undulating roads, the elastic characteristics of the suspension will cause the drive axle to move up and down, and the transmission distance and transmission angle of the transmission shaft will change dynamically.

Special-purpose vehicles that need to install pumps also need to install a drive shaft to connect them, such as sanitation sprinkler trucks, dust suppression trucks, hazardous oil tanker trucks and semi trailers. This type of vehicle needs to install a power take-off on the gearbox, which can use the power of the gearbox to install a drive shaft to drive the pump.

The transmission shaft usually consists of a shaft tube, telescopic sleeve, universal joint and other parts. The existence of the telescopic sleeve can adjust the distance and angle between the gearbox and the drive axle; the universal joint ensures the change of the angle between the output shaft of the gearbox and the input axis of the drive axle, achieving constant angular speed rotation of the two axes.

Judging from the role it undertakes, the transmission shaft has relatively high requirements for dynamic balance, quality, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance and other performance requirements, as well as high requirements for materials and processing technology. However, there is no doubt that steel transmission shafts are still the most widely used in commercial vehicles. Its advantages are durability and cheapness.

However, the steel transmission shaft also has a major disadvantage, that is, it is relatively heavy. In addition to adding more weight to the vehicle, the steel transmission shaft also makes the engine more difficult to work, because it must drive a heavier transmission shaft to drive the vehicle forward.

The aluminum alloy transmission shaft is not what everyone thinks of as "all aluminum alloy". Instead, the shaft tube is made of aluminum alloy, and the universal joints are mostly made of American standard 8620H steel. It is understood that the aluminum alloy commonly used as the transmission shaft tube is 6061 aluminum alloy, and the main alloy elements are magnesium and silicon.

It has excellent corrosion resistance and weldability, and has good oxidation effect. It is widely used in various industrial structural parts that require a certain strength and high corrosion resistance.

The ultimate tensile strength of 6061 metal sheets for trailer is more than 205MPa, and its position is not at the maximum equivalent stress. This also ensures that the strength of the entire transmission shaft can cope with most working conditions. Except in extremely severe conditions, it is difficult to the point of breaking the drive shaft.
