5454 Aluminum Plate Suppliers

The main concern when sourcing 5454 aluminum plate is not simply availability. It is confirming that every plate meets the specified chemistry, temper, dimensional tolerance, and documentation requirements for the final application.

5454 is an aluminum-magnesium-manganese alloy in the 5xxx series. It is widely specified for welded structures and transport equipment where moderate strength, corrosion resistance, and dependable elevated-temperature performance are required. A frequent application is road tanker fabrication, where material consistency directly affects forming, welding, inspection, and traceability.

Specify 5454 Plate Before Comparing Suppliers

Start with a written technical request. A quotation based only on alloy and thickness leaves too much room for variation. ASTM B209 covers aluminum and aluminum-alloy sheet and plate, but the purchase order should still state the required temper, dimensions, tolerances, surface condition, inspection scope, and certification format.

According to the Aluminum Association registered composition limits for 5454, magnesium is 2.4-3.0%, manganese is 0.50-1.0%, chromium is 0.05-0.20%, and copper is limited to 0.10% maximum. These limits distinguish 5454 from nearby 5xxx alloys and should be visible on the material test certificate.

Purchase-order itemWhat to stateWhy it matters
Product formPlate, sheet, coil, strip, circle, or foilControls mill route, flatness expectations, and available sizes
StandardASTM B209, or applicable EN/customer specificationDefines baseline material requirements
Alloy and temper5454-H32, 5454-H34, 5454-O, or exact required temperTemper strongly affects forming and strength
DimensionsThickness, width, length, thickness tolerancePrevents unsuitable conversion or yield loss
DocumentationEN 10204 3.1 certificate, chemistry, mechanical results, traceabilitySupports receiving inspection and quality records
Surface requirementMill finish, protective film, allowable scratches or stainsAvoids disputes after delivery

Do not assume one temper suits every fabrication route. H32 and H34 are strain-hardened, stabilized tempers commonly selected when higher strength is needed. O temper is generally preferred where severe forming is planned. Confirm minimum bend radius and welding procedure requirements with the fabricator rather than selecting a temper solely by tensile values.

For transport equipment, Tanker Plate specifications should also identify whether plates will be welded, cold formed, or subjected to post-fabrication testing. If the project allows an alternative alloy, compare the design basis with Aluminum 5454 product data rather than substituting a different 5xxx grade by name alone.

Verify Mill Capability, Certificates, and Incoming Quality

A capable source should provide documentation before shipment, not after a quality issue appears. Request a sample material test certificate for the same alloy, product form, and temper. It should identify heat or cast number, chemical composition, tensile test results where applicable, dimensions, and the governing specification.

Use this supplier-review checklist:

  • Confirm whether the supplier is a mill, stockholder, processor, or trading company.

  • Match the offered standard to the drawing or purchase specification.

  • Check that the certificate heat number can be linked to plate markings and packing records.

  • Ask whether ultrasonic testing, hardness testing, or third-party inspection is available when required.

  • Establish permitted over-tolerance, under-tolerance, and length/width variation before production.

  • Verify packaging for moisture protection, edge protection, and interleaving where surface quality is critical.

  • Define the nonconformance process, including photo evidence, sampling method, and claim time limits.

Mechanical-property data must be read with context. Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and bend performance vary by thickness, temper, and testing direction. A generic data sheet is useful for preliminary design, but the certified test report governs the delivered material.

For welded assemblies, confirm the applicable welding procedure specification and filler-metal selection with the responsible engineer. Aluminum-magnesium alloys can be sensitive to unsuitable heat input, contamination, and poor storage conditions. Plate quality cannot compensate for uncontrolled fabrication practices.

Control Delivered Cost and Current Compliance Exposure

Do not compare quoted prices only by price per kilogram. A lower base-metal figure can be offset by nonstandard dimensions, extra trimming, certificate charges, minimum order requirements, inland freight, export packing, or a longer lead time.

Traceability and emissions reporting are now more relevant to aluminum sourcing. The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, established under Regulation (EU) 2023/956, covers aluminum. Its definitive period began on January 1, 2026. Organizations importing covered aluminum products into the EU should confirm the applicable tariff classification, embedded-emissions reporting obligations, and supplier data availability with customs and compliance specialists.

Ask suppliers whether they can provide production-route information, recycled-content declarations when requested, and emissions data using a stated methodology. These documents should be treated separately from a material test certificate: chemistry and mechanical compliance do not automatically verify environmental claims.

Before release, issue one controlled specification sheet, require certificate review against that sheet, and inspect the first received plates for identification, dimensions, surface condition, and packaging integrity. This process makes quotations comparable and reduces the risk of receiving 5454 material that is technically similar but unsuitable for the intended fabrication route.
